North Dakotans for Sound Government Broadens Opposition to Measure 1

(Bismarck, ND) – North Dakotans for Sound Government gained significant support this week from additional North Dakota organizations who now publicly Oppose Measure 1.

➢ Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce ➢ Grand Forks – East Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce ➢ Minot Chamber of Commerce ➢ North Dakota Ethanol Producers

“We welcome support from these great North Dakota organizations and the thousands of employees they represent. Their support is a prime example of the widespread enthusiasm NDSG is generating throughout the state, across all industries, in opposition to Measure 1,” says GNDC President & CEO Arik Spencer

In addition, North Dakotans for Sound Government applauds the North Dakota Catholic Conference announcing their opposition to Measure 1.

“The Catholic Church believes that ethics and integrity should be the hallmark of the political process. Measure 1 is not about whether someone supports more integrity and ethics in government. It is about the actual language of the measure. It is poorly written and unnecessarily threatens the work of churches, charities, and social service agencies,“ said Christopher Dodson, Executive Director and General Counsel of the North Dakota Catholic Conference.

ACLU North Dakota Executive Director Heather Smith echoed, “This measure isn’t just about lobbyists and lawmakers. It’s about activists like you and me. Though it’s being promoted as an ethics and anti-corruption amendment, Measure 1 is actually so poorly written that it would institute a host of new restrictions and regulations on political speech and advocacy that would violate the First Amendment rights of all North Dakotans. When it comes to the political process, we all have a right to be heard. Measure 1 poses a significant threat to that.”

Geoff Simon, Chairman of NDSG, noted the courageous stand of both the North Dakota Catholic Conference and ACLU North Dakota. “When these two North Dakota organizations independently oppose a ballot measure, you know the Measure is fatally flawed.”
